BMW M57 guides

Three questions come up before every order, and none of them is answered by a product page: what goes wrong with an M57, how long one lasts, and which car to buy to get one. These are the long answers, written by the people who build the kits.

Each guide is written to be read once, before you spend money. Figures are sourced, variants are named by their BMW engine code rather than by the family name, and where there is no honest number we say so instead of inventing one.

  1. Known faults

BMW M57 problems and how to fix them

Four faults account for most of what goes wrong with a BMW M57, and not one of them is a reason to avoid the engine. All four are documented, all four are fixable, and three of the four are far cheaper to deal with on an engine stand than in a vehicle — which is the strongest argument there is for sorting them during a conversion rather than after it.

  2. Reliability

    Is the BMW M57 reliable?

Yes — with a caveat that matters more than the answer. The M57's reputation was earned by engines that were maintained, and the remaining life of a used M57 is a paperwork question rather than an engineering one. The engine is not usually what lets people down. The history behind it is.

  3. Donor vehicles

Which BMWs have the M57 engine?

The M57 is BMW's 3.0 litre straight-six diesel, built from 1998 to 2013 in four generations, and it was fitted across the 3, 5, 6 and 7 Series and the X3, X5 and X6 — plus, outside BMW, the Range Rover L322 and the Opel Omega B. If you are about to buy a donor vehicle, the table below is the page you want.

Conversion kits by platform

Every kit is built for one platform and one gearbox combination. Start with the vehicle.

Short answers to the same questions

The four questions buyers ask most, answered in two sentences each.

Tell us the vehicle and we will tell you the engine

Send the platform, the gearbox you want to run and how the vehicle is used. An engineer answers — not a form letter.
