BMW M57N Engine (2003-2007)

The M57N is the twin turbo 306d4 generation of BMW’s 3.0 liter inline six, rated at 272 HP and 560 Nm on a cast iron block. This is a brand new engine supplied direct from BMW with zero mileage, so nothing about its service history has to be taken on trust.

It ships as a bare M57 306d4 in naked form rather than as a complete dressed assembly. That suits a like for like replacement in a 530d, 730d or E53 X5 as readily as a Defender, Patrol, Pajero or Transit conversion, where the ancillaries are dictated by the conversion rather than by the donor car.

Where a BMW M57N twin turbo engine makes sense

Two sorts of customer buy this engine. The first has a BMW that needs an engine and wants it fixed once, in which case the Direct Fit list below is the whole conversation. The second is building something that never had an M57 in it, and for them the interesting part is that the engine arrives with no history attached to it at all: no previous owner’s maintenance decisions to inherit, no ancillaries that were already tired when the donor car was scrapped, and no need to strip and inspect before the build starts.

The cast iron block is the defining detail of this generation and it is worth knowing before you plan the rest of the drivetrain, because some of our kits are specified around the later aluminium block engines instead. That is covered under Before you order below.

What the extras list tells you

The Optional Extras on this listing run further than a straight engine rebuild needs, down to a power steering pump, an air conditioning compressor and conversion specific components. That is deliberate, because a large share of these engines go into vehicles that have to keep their own power steering and air conditioning working after the swap. If yours is one of them, list what the vehicle has to keep when you enquire and we will quote the engine dressed to match rather than leaving you to chase parts one at a time afterwards.

Anything not on that list is not coming with the engine. There are no mounts, no gearbox adapter, no cooling package and no conversion loom here, because all of those are decided by the vehicle rather than by the engine.

Before you order

Confirm the engine code your conversion is built around. Our M57N2 to 8HP Swap Kit states that it fits aluminium block M57N2 engines with codes 306D3 and 306D5, and is not compatible with earlier cast iron M57 engines; a steel block version is in development and not yet available. If a ZF 8HP is part of your plan, raise that with us before you buy an engine, not after.
