BMW M57D30TU2 M57N2 Engine (2006-2013)

The M57D30TU2 is the final development of the M57, coded 306d5 by BMW and rated at 286 HP. This one is brand new and supplied direct from BMW: not a reconditioned unit and not pulled from a donor car, which is what most builders want under them when the engine has to work for a living.

Supplied as a genuine BMW long block, this engine features a cast iron cylinder block, aluminum cylinder head, common rail fuel injection architecture, and BMW’s final generation M57 design improvements. The engine is delivered exactly as supplied by BMW and has never been installed in a vehicle.

Buying a brand new M57N2 engine instead of a used one

Almost everyone looking for a BMW M57N2 engine for sale ends up staring at units pulled out of scrapped cars. The difficulty there is rarely the engine itself, it is the paperwork behind it: an unknown service history, a timing chain of unknown age, and a compression figure you have to take on trust. A zero mileage engine takes that whole argument out of the project. Nothing has been run, nothing has been apart, and when the conversion misbehaves later you are debugging your own fuelling and wiring rather than wondering about the bottom end.

That is worth most on two kinds of build. One is a vehicle trusted a long way from any workshop. The other is a workshop build that gets sold on, where the engine’s provenance is part of what the next owner is paying for and a receipt beats a story.

It is supplied in naked form rather than as a dressed assembly, so it arrives as a clean base for either a factory replacement or a conversion build where the ancillaries are specified separately.

A full engine dressing service is available at additional cost. Depending on what the build needs, the engine can leave here with turbochargers, fuel systems, wiring harnesses, ECUs, manifolds, ancillary components and conversion specific parts already fitted.

Read those two lists as a pair

The first list is what is bolted together when the engine leaves BMW. The second is what has to be added before it will start, and none of it is on the engine unless you ask for it.

Nothing here mounts the engine or joins it to a gearbox either. That hardware is specific to the vehicle it is going into and lives in the conversion kits: Defender 6HP, Defender 8HP, Discovery, Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and Ford Transit. If one of those is already on order, say so when you enquire and we will go through which extras the kit already covers and which are still down to you.

Before you order

Settle the engine code first. This listing is the 306d5. The M57N we list separately is the 306d4. Kits, looms and engine management are specified around one code or the other, so check which one your build expects rather than assuming an M57 is an M57.

If a ZF 8HP is going behind it, read the fitment notes on the BMW M57N2 to 8HP Swap Kit before you commit to anything. That kit states 306D3 and 306D5 as its direct fit.
